China International Flower Exhibition opens
The 18th China (Kunming) International Flower Exhibition got underway at the Kunming International Exhibition Center, Yunnan province on June 22, showcasing more than 1,500 kinds of flora from around the world.
Themed on "exquisite flowers to improve life quality", the four-day event will also host a gardening skills forum between China and Israel, a forum on modern greenhouse equipment and technologies, an art of body flower show and a Japanese flower art show.
With 350 exhibition booths, the event has attracted 160 exhibitors and experts from Israel, Japan and the Netherlands, to discuss new planting technologies and cooperation.
Cao Ronggen, president of the Yunnan flower association, said that the flower exhibition has always encouraged innovation since it was first held, and aims to attract more international flower experts and business people to exchange their ideas on market changes and production technologies.
Often dubbed the "kingdom of flowers", Yunnan is one of world's top three cities for flower production, boasting more than 1,500 different kinds being cultivated.
In 2016, the total planting area in Yunnan reached 1.21 million mu (80,667 hectares), an increase of 10.1 percent compared to the previous year. Gross output hit 21.51 billion yuan ($3.14 million) last year, a year-on-year growth of 11 percent.
Thanks to the research and development of new flowers, the flower industry saw exports rise to $97.97 million in 2016, 3.9 percent more than in 2015.
