India's wholesale price index (WPI) eased to 12.07 percent in June this year, data released by the federal ministry of commerce and industry said Wednesday.
"The annual rate of inflation is 12.07 percent (provisional) for the month of June 2021 (over June 2020) as compared to -1.81 percent in June 2020. The high rate of inflation in June 2021 is primarily due to low base effect and rise in prices of mineral oils viz. petrol, diesel (HSD), naphtha, ATF, furnace oil etc., and manufactured products like basic metal, food products, chemical products etc., as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year," a statement issued by the ministry said.
In May, the wholesale price inflation was recorded at 12.94 percent.
The monthly rate of inflation, based on month over month movement of WPI index, in June 2021 stood at 0.75 percent (provisional) as compared to 0.53 in May 2021, the ministry said.
WPI inflation, an indicator of prices in the wholesale market, rises or falls mainly due to steep increase or decrease in commodity prices globally
WPI Food Index in June 2021 eased to 6.66 percent in June from 8.11 percent in May.
The Food Index, consisting of food articles from primary articles group and food products from manufactured products group, has remained unchanged at 158.6 in June 2021 as compared to May 2021.
The index for the manufactured products group increased by 0.38 percent to 131.5 (provisional) in June 2021 as compared to 131.0 in May 2021, the data showed.
The index for primary articles increased by 0.86 percent to 151.8 (provisional) in June 2021 from 150.5 (provisional) for the month of May 2021.
The index for fuel and power increased by 2.90 percent to 113.7 (provisional) in June 2021 from 110.5 (provisional) for the month of May 2021.
